Our Best Serums for Oily Skin

While you may already know that serums can target skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation, dehydration and signs of ageing, they can also bring some much-needed balance to oily skin types. You just need to know what ingredients to look for and when to apply yours.

What is oily skin?

If your face is prone to being on the shiny side, especially later on in the day, and your makeup can be known to slide off mid-afternoon, your sebaceous glands are probably working overtime. Everyone has oil in their skin to keep it hydrated and healthy but too much sebum can cause skin, especially on the T-Zone, which makes up your forehead, nose and chin, to feel greasy and be more prone to breakouts and acne.

What causes oily skin?

Unfortunately, some causes of oily skin are in your control and some are not. Genetics can play a big part. If one of your parents has oily skin, the chances are you will too. Androgens are the hormones predominantly responsible for producing oil – increased androgen production, which can happen during puberty, menstruation and pregnancy, can encourage an increase in sebum production. Stress and rising levels of the stress hormone cortisol can also stimulate an increase in oil production.

Scrubbing your face too many times a day and using products that are too harsh for your skin can also strip away the natural oils that need to keep it healthy. This can then trigger the overproduction of sebum as your body creates more oil to replace what is lost. Continually overwashing your skin can therefore encourage the continued over production of oil.

Where you live and the time of year can also have an impact on how oily your skin is. Hot, humid climates and warm weather during the summer months can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, too. Using blotting sheets throughout the day and the right skincare routine can help to soak up excess oil though.

How to apply serum

Gel Eclat

Old price £28.00 New price £19.60

Balance is key to any good oily skincare routine. Start your day with a gentle cleanser that removes sweat and any debris you may have picked up from your pillowcase overnight but doesn’t strip your skin’s surface of natural oils and moisture. Our non-drying Gel Éclat foam cleanser gently removes impurities while hydrating your skin.

Next, gently exfoliate with products rich in salicylic acid or other chemical exfoliants that penetrate deep inside the pores to keep them clear of dirt, oil and dead skin cells.

Follow with a serum for oily skin rich in ingredients such as sebum-controlling niacinamide, like our Rénergie H.C.F. Triple Serum, which targets oily skin at the source by slowing down how much oil your skin releases. Salicylic acid serums also help to deep clean pores of excess oil and prevent breakouts. Apply on the face and neck in the morning and night using outward and upward motions and follow with your daily moisturiser to trap in the active ingredients and all their benefits.

Every morning skincare routine should finish with a layer of high-factor broad-spectrum SPF to keep your skin protected from damaging UV rays. Look for mattifying formulas to keep oily skin shine-free.

Oily Skin FAQs

What is oily skin?

Oily skin is just what it sounds like – skin that produces an excess of natural oil or sebum. This can be linked to hormonal changes, such as puberty, the menopause or pregnancy, or external factors such as stress, but it might just be your particular skin type. Everybody has sebaceous glands which naturally produce oil, particularly in the T-zone, but if you’re seeing excess oil on your forehead, nose and chin, daily shine or your makeup is melting away due to oil, then you have oily skin. However, skin goes through many changes and cycles so you may not always have oily skin.

What type of serum is best for oily skin?

A balancing skin serum is the best choice for those with oily skin. We recommend our Advanced Génifique Serum which helps to strengthen the skin barrier, leading to skin that functions efficiently and feels smooth and balanced.

How do serums help oily skin?

Facial serums typically target specific skin issues with active ingredients. Lightweight, but supercharged, serums should be applied after cleansing and before moisturising each morning and evening for impressive benefits. Our bestselling Advanced Génifique Serum is ideal for all skin types and works to restore healthy, younger-looking skin with a blend of hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and 7 pre and probiotic extracts.

How often should I use a serum if I have oily skin?

When it comes to skincare, consistency is key, so apply your serum every morning and evening for best results. Always apply after cleansing.

What ingredients should I look for in a serum for oily skin?

Try balancing ingredients such as pre and probiotic extracts, our bestselling Advanced Génifique Serum is ideal for all skin types and works to restore healthy, younger-looking skin with a blend of hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and 7 pre and probiotic extracts.

How long does it take to see results from using a serum on oily skin?

Results depend on a host of factors including the environment, consistency of use, stress and even the other products being used, but we usually say around 4 weeks of consistent day and night use.

How should I store my serum for oily skin?

Store your serum in a cool, dry space, heat and humidity are not good for skincare products so avoid storing in the bathroom.

Can you use serum and face oil together?

Yes, always apply your lightweight serum after cleansing, wait a few minutes for the beneficial ingredients to be absorbed. You can follow this with a face oil, gently massaging into the complexion.
