Through the Domaine de la Rose

Lancôme is committed to preserving and passing on perfumery’s natural and cultural heritage, while contributing to the celebration of Grasse’s perfume-making savoir-faire, recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage.

AN EXCEPTIONAL TERROIR

Grasse owes its destiny in part to its exceptional terroir, nestled between sea and mountains, and to its microclimate, which make the region particularly suited to cultivating many plants.

Terroir is the land and the people who live there. Even today, Grasse retains its unique place in the world, thanks to the farmers, artisans, manufacturers and perfumers who work to preserve its natural and cultural savoir-faire.

Grasse, the cradle of
modern perfumery

Lancome organic farm

In the Middle Ages, tanners in Grasse began perfuming leather with local flowers. The art of perfumery flourished in the region, while the land was blanketed with flower fields from across the globe.

In the 17th century, perfume became the city’s principal activity. Today, Grasse remains the perfume capital of the world.

The Lancome Rose House

The Rose House

Step into the Rose House at Lancôme’s Domaine de la Rose, where nature and architecture harmonise to create a breathtaking symphony. The contemporary pink monolith with a circular entrance inspired by the Lancôme “Ô” was designed by renowned French architects Lucie Niney and Thibault Marca from the agency NeM Architectes.

The Rose House was eco-designed using local, recycled, bio-sourced and artisanal materials, and has been awarded BDM (Bâtiment Durable Méditerranéen) Gold certification, a label recognising sustainable construction projects in the French Mediterranean region.

Centifolia rose,
the domaine’s leading lady

At the Domaine de la Rose, the Centifolia rose reigns supreme. Named for its myriad petals, this highly coveted treasure is also known as the May rose, as it blooms and is harvested during this month, in the morning, just as the bud begins to blossom.

A delicate symbol of perfume plant cultivation in Grasse since the 17th century, the Centifolia rose had nearly disappeared.

Yet, by cultivating thousands of these rose bushes at the Domaine since 2020, Lancôme is helping to preserve and nurture this iconic local rose.
